The Union Railroad Maintenance Shop (located underneath the bridge on Duquesne Blvd, directly below Kennywood Park) must have been abandoned sometime in the early to mid 1990s. Steve and I ventured in after I spotted the ruined buildings while bike riding on the Steel Valley Heritage Trail. The overgrown vegetation and rusty metal objects strewn about immediately clued us that this place hadn’t been used in years. We saw some cool old machines, a lot of employee documents that someone apparently was trying to burn and, of course, lots of train stuff. I took some of these papers home with me for closer examination. So interesting to read things that were written thirty or forty years ago, words about random people I’d never met, but who’s lives were spent working, living and breathing in this place. I found death notices, pay stubs, doctor’s reports and even a dusty old magazine sporting the image of a “brand new” 1981 Plymouth. We didn’t get a chance to explore every building (Steve was being a puss), but you can rest assured you haven’t seen the last of the inside of this place…
P.S. - I got a flat tire too #fml
